Marck Maroun

On 2.3.11 we had Marck Maroun, a graduate student from SDSU come to speak to our class.

Marck reviewed the three basic rock categories RocksEarth'sMemorySticks and introduced us to specific rocks, layers of the Earth, and plate tectonics. He helped us connect rocks and the rock cycle to our big idea: The surface of the Earth is constantly changing and no feature on Earth is permanent.

On 2.14.11 we had Dr. Clive Dorman from SDSU come to speak to our class. He presented answers to the question, "How do we know what is inside the Earth?" Dr. Dorman gave us real scientific information including calculations! He helped us understand that scientists really do have a good idea of what is inside the Earth even though they can't open it up.

On 3.3.11 Marck Maroun came back out to our classroom to talk about Global Plate Tectonics (Global Plate Tectonics PowerPoint). He helped clarify connections between plate boundaries and geologic events. He also talked about the Juan de Fuca, Pacific and North American Plates that affect us here in California! It was great!

On 3.17.11 Dr. Clive Dorman came to speak to our class again. This time on earthquakes! He brought in some cool demonstrations. Just to name a few, he showed us how P-waves and S-waves and surface waves work. He also talked to us about our local faults, the Rose Canyon Fault and the San Andreas Fault, and we looked at our hills and mountains around school and talked about their formation! In addition, he talked to us about the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami. It was quite informative. See his presentation Earthquakes~Earth shaking.(We were so engaged; we forgot the photos!)
